165/65R14 tyre size for light commercial vehicles

165/65R14 is a common tyre size for light commercial vehicles like work van or delivery vehicles. This tyres has a tyre width of 165 mm and a tyre height of 65 mm. The letter R indicates that this is a Radial tyre. The rim size of this tyre is 14 inch.

How do I find the correct tyre for my light commercial vehicle?

Finding out the tire size of commercial vehicles such as work vans,  delivery vans and similar vehicles is actually quite easy. Light commercial vehicles uses the same tyre size notation as cars.
You can find the size notation on the sidewall of the tyre. The sidewall is on the side of the tyre. The size notation contains of letters and numbers. To explain this string of information we will use the following string of information:  195/65 R15 91 V

The first 3 digits show the tyre width, 195 mm in this case. Next comes the / sign (slash). This is a separator. After the "/" comes a number, this number shows the height of the tyre. For example, if the number 65 is written, it means that the height of the tire is 65% of the width of the tire. After this number comes a letter. Often this is the letter R which indicates that it is a radial tire. If there is a letter D, it means it is a diagonal tire.

The 2 digits after the last letter show the diameter of the rim. In this case, it is 15 inches.

This is followed by the figure 91. This digit is the load index of the tire. The load index indicates the maximum weight the tire can carry. The last letter shows the speed index of the tire. The speed index indicates the maximum speed the tyre may be driven.

Both the speed index and load index must be derived from a table.

What are the best tyres for my light commercial vehicle?

There are many tyres available for commercial vehicles. Therefore, it is important to consider the purposes for which the tyres will be used.

Do you also drive a lot in the winter? Then choose a winter tyre or an all-season tyre.

Do you deliver a lot of packages over long distances and therefore drive mainly on the motorway? Then choose a tyre that has been developed specifically for that purpose.

You can also choose a tyre that reduces the fuel consumption of the light commercial vehicle. But there are also tyres that are produced precisely to guarantee a high level of comfort. Great if you have to deliver parcels all day, for example.

The most important thing, however, is to choose the same tyre size as that prescribed by the manufacturer of your vehicle. There are certain conditions attached to tyres. Some tyres are only suitable for transporting X amount of weight. How much weight you are allowed to transport with your van depends, for example, on the load index of the tyre.

How fast you are allowed to drive with the van depends on the speed index of the tyre.

What is the load index of my light commercial vehicle tyre?

The load index indicates the maximum weight that the tyre is allowed to transport. It is legally not allowed to mount tyres on your vehicle that have a lower load index number than the producer of the vehicle prescribes. But you can always mount tyres which have a higher load index number than the orginal tyres.
You can find the load index on the sidewall of the tyre. The load index is indicated after the rim size.

The load index is always giving in a number of 2 or 3 digits. This number needs to be interpreted with the help of a table. You can find this table and more information about load index of a light commercial vehicle on the link below.
